Wifi VOIP phone?

#1
I'm a new convert to Voipfone and realised that to cheaply (freely?) call my wife we really need a voip capable phone each!

The simplest way for me to leave a voip phone at home would be a wireless one (I'm out of RJ45s on my router and we don't leave a pc on at all times!)

Looking around there are a few wifi capable voip phones (such as the Cisco Unified Wireless IP Phone and something I found on eBay calling itself "SC-8800 Wifi IP Phone")

Has anyone any experience with these types of devices and are there any recommendations about which is easiest to use with Voipfone?

Many thanks

Phil G

Hi Phil

Firstly, I'd like to welcome you to Voipfone!
On the topic of WiFi-enabled phones, we've tested a couple and generally haven't got on too well with them - because WiFi signal is so sporadic, it can affect the quality of your calls.

I understand you've run out of ports on your router, a 4 port switched can be sourced pretty cheaply on the internet. A better alternative to the WiFi phone is a Linksys PAP2 adaptor.

The PAP2 adaptor plugs in to your router, which you can then connect a standard wireless DECT telephone. This will achieve the same thing, but you'll receive a more reliable service.

More information on the PAP2's can be found on our website under the Hardware tab. If you've got any questions. please do not hesitate to ask!

OK, thanks - that gives me something to think about

But when I add up a PAP2, a "new" network switch and a DECT phone I'm looking at an investment that will require me to make some big phone call savings before I "break even" :(

Mind you, if your service wasn't so easy(!) I wouldn't even have been tempted in the first place

Thanks again

Oooh

Just spotted your write up of the Linksys 2102 VoIP Adaptor

That looks like it will solve my switch port problem (if I am reading it right)

It seems to have TWO LAN ports - one to connect the adapter to my router/switch and a second to connect an EXISTING device - so I wouldn't need any new ports

Is that right?

Yes with the Linksys 2102 you do have an ethernet connection to connect your PC through this device.

Just to add to the "WiFi Voip" discussion I have been using a few Cisco SPA525G2's these phones have both "Ethernet" and "WiFi" as standard and work well on Voipfone when set on either connection.

As Customer Services point out though check your WiFi signal strength though because obviously if you connect a Voipfone to your network and it has poor WiFi coverage then this will reflect on your call quality as well as your registration!
