poor quality


We are a small business and are interested in utilising voip for our telephone system. However, before we purchase a range of services I created a free account to test your service. Unfortunatly, when making calls the reciever of my call experiences a large amount of background inteference. I hope you can help me resolve the issue so that i may go ahead with developing our system.

Here are some diagnostic details that may be of use:

To test the service I utlised the free softphone software provided by yourselves with a standard headphone and microphone. This was ran through a small LAN that connects to a 20mb cable internet connection via a buffalo WHR-HP-G54S 4 port cable router. To test if this problem was a bandwidth issue I ran the winMTR line test and recieved average response times of about 10-20 ms which seems not just fine but good.

To be frank the softphone is a bit of a toy - it's not for serious business use as its performance depends on so many things beyond our control such as the quality of the headset, how much your PC is doing, etc etc.

Even so many people do use it and find it adequate and you certainly should not experience the problems you are describing. There are some things to try in the user manual here:

If you can, your best bet is to get hold of a decent business hardware phone - such as the snom; their sound quality is far superior to even a normal land line.
