Newbie with fax problem

#1
Apologies if the answer is already elsewhere (I have looked) but I am new to all this and clearly at a far more basic understanding of what is going on than most who post.
I set up my fax number and sent a test fax from the office where I work during the day(dedicated fax machine) to my new voipfone fax number at home. It came out as vertical black stripes, like a barcode but closer together. I saved it and tried to open in Adobe Reader 8 but get a message "AR could not open because it is not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged -for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded"
Any suggestions please?
Kind regards

Well done that man. Downloaded Irfanview and away we went. The quality of the fax isn't good as there are a number of horizontal strips which take out lines of the fax content. Will experiment next week and ask SWMBO to fax from her place in case it's at the sender end.
Thanks and regards
