Hi,
Just a brainstorm here.....has anyone had any experience using a voipfone number/extention on a monitored security system??
I'm in the business of installing alarms and was wondering if anyone has ever tried this, it just seems cheaper than to run and rent a new BT line for the sole purpose of connecting the alarm system to the monitoring service (or directly to a key holder as in some cases)
Another quirk to this could be that as a failsafe, in a power failiure, the connection to the internet and server systems is generally backed b y a UPS which maintains the power supply for a few hours or so. The alarms I install also have a 4 hour battery backup sothat in the event of a power failiure the connection to the voipfone line would be maintained sothat a power loss message could be sent out.
Any thoughts any1??? |

Don't these systems do some non-voice communication stuff down the line too?
Or is it just a regular voice call?
If the former, then there's no guarantee that these signals would make it over the VoIP link intact. |

Depends on the speed of the transmition, Sky boxes do not work but some people have said some of the fax machines that run at a slower data rate do work! (14.4 Kbps for example)
Although i have never tried it so can't be 100% on that, just what i have read. Even then it was not very reliable!
As pointed out above if it just plays a voice mesage via a voice dialer then there really shouldn't be a problem.
Do you know speed the alarm system sends it's data? |
