I've been thinking of converting my small Compaq Ipaq PC into a phone system and want to know if this is possible.

Phone line comming into the house 01686 62XXXX
Voipfone account incomming number 01686 XXXXXX

Can i plug any normal modem into the PC and connect line comming in to it then set-up 2 IP phones on say extension numbers 100 and 105. Then get the asterisk box to route all the calls comming through the land line 01686 62XXXX to extension 100 and all the Voipfone calls to ext 105???

Hope all that makes sense.

Hobbit,

what you want Asterisk to do is very easy!! However, you need to use a specific piece of hardware called an FXO to take the incoming BT call. In it's basic form, an FXO is a modem, but quite specialised. There are several version and all tend to fall under the description of a X100P.

HOWEVER, please be careful. If you were to buy any old cheap thing (as I did, initially) it may not work and, if it does, you may get a lot of echo, making the the whole exercise pointless. There are lots of forums and wiki's making simila comments.

I bought my card from x100p.eu. It is more expensive than other products but worked, without issues.

As for Asterisk itself, use an installer, such as Trixbox.org. Unless you know a bit about Linux, tackling an Asterisk install can be a pain, however, with trixbox, you download the software (500+megs), burn the ISO, stick it in your PC and it does the rest (NOTE - THIS WILL WIPE YOUR HARD DRIVE). After this, it is all relative plan sailing. There is also a great community.

The final point is that once it is set up and the right settings are put in, the Voipfone service works great. Yes, I did have issues, like many other people, but the support team were great in getting it working!

I hope this helps!

We managed to get a Zaptel clone for buttons and this card now allows incoming and outgoing calls through our trixbox.

I dont want to advertise anyones products on an open forum so if you would like details of where we got the zaptel from pm me Smile

Everything you have stated as requirements is entirely possible with trixbox/asterisk..
